Life Coaching vs. Therapy

Many people ask me about the difference between life coaching and therapy.

Honestly, I’ve never been in therapy but I do know that there is a difference. Mostly in the approach.

From what I understand about therapy, it is more past-focused. You dig into your past events and experiences to uncover why you may be feeling and/or acting a certain way. I picture things like losing a loved one unexpectedly or any kind of childhood trauma.

Contrarily, life coaching focuses on the present to help you get to where you want to be in the future. I picture things like losing a loved one unexpectedly or any kind of childhood trauma. Also, advancing in your career, achieving a goal, or figuring out what your next phase of life will look like is covered under life coaching.

Notice that some of these overlap with both therapy and life coaching. It’s because there is no right or wrong way.

Some people try one and then the other. Everyone is different so while some may have a breakthrough with the therapist, others may have a breakthrough with the life coach.

THE most important thing is that you get the help that you need. Nothing in the world is more important than your long-term mental health. I promise you.

If you’re unclear on whether life coaching is for you, let’s talk. I can help you decide if it’s a fit. Schedule a call with me here.
